Trauma, disease, accidents, and natural disasters result in hundreds of thousands of new amputees per year, especially in heavy pedestrianized, urban settings. For too many, adequate modern prosthetics are prohibitively expensive, while low-cost knees present significant limitations to smooth mobility.
